A Tribe Called Quest. "Luck of Lucien." The Anthology, Zomba Recording LLC, 1999.

While this hip hop crew disbanded many moons ago, and we tragically lost MC Phife Dawg earlier this year, ATCQ's beats and rhymes continue to live on in our lives. This is one of their funkiest and the perfect jam for an evening living room dance party, in my experience. You should know.

Motorcycles, blackjack, classic vinyl

Beyoncé. "DADDY LESSONS." LEMONADE, Parkwood Entertainment, 2016.

The lyrics on this song are pure fire and the arrangement with that extended New Orleans horn intro, the acoustic guitar, and hand claps, is just a little bit country in the best way.

Inquiring minds can learn more in this Billboard article, which chronicles the making of the track with R&B singer-songwriter Kevin Cossom, writer Wynter Gordon, and Alex Delicata.

A message of light

Leon Bridges. "River." Coming Home, LisaSawyer63, Inc. under exclusive license to Columbia Records, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment, 2015.

Leon Bridges is far and away one of my favourite artists to have discovered in the past year. This gospel that closes out his Grammy-nominated debut Coming Home is gorgeous, powerful, and its harmonies get deep under your skin. The video below was shot by our friend, the incredibly talented Cinematographer Chayse Irvin. Read Bridges' words below about his inspiration and intentions for both the song and the video.

Dream comfort memory to spare

Neil Young. "Helpless." Greatest Hits, Reprise Records, 2004.

We all have our Up North. This song encapsulates so many of the feelings I have for the woods, the rocks, the lakes, summertime in the Muskokas, Georgian Bay, Algonquin Park, and the multitude of breathtaking spots we are incredibly fortunate to have in Ontario. Listening to Neil Young on the drive south down Highway 11 on the the Northland bus with a window seat and feeling blessed was such a transformative and grounding way to begin this internal journey home. Even when home can feel so very far away. Je me souviens.
